Setting up the ActionTec DSL-Modem / Router for QWest DSL
Firmware version out Spring 2006
Quick Setup | Advanced Setup | Wireless Setup

Note: The ActionTec DSL-Modem can be connected by Ethernet or Usb or Wireless. The easiest and most desirable method is Ethernet. Use this method if the computer has an ethernet card. The screen shots seen here are for the Wireless ActionTec modem. If the modem is the non-wireless version there will be no menu options for the wireless configuration, but the rest of the configuration should be the same.

Quick Setup

1. Connect the power supply, phone line, and ethernet cable to the modem. Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the computer.

2. On the computer make sure the Network Connection is enabled and set to DHCP. Open up Internet Explorer (or any other web browser) on the computer and go to the following web site "http://192.168.0.1". This is the IP address for the modem. The following screen will display on the web browser:

3. Click on the "Quick Setup" tab. The following screen will display:

4. Click on the "Next" button. The following screen will display:

5. Make sure "No" is selected then click "Next". The following screen will display:

6. Configure the modem as shown above except using the correct Username and Password. Click on "Apply". The following screen will display:

7. You should see this page and then, once the settings are successful you will see the prior page. That should be it.

 USING ADVANCED SETUP
1. You may need to use the Advanced Setup feature. If so, click on the "Advanced Setup Tab" located at the right side of the top menu on the start page. You should see this page.

2. Click on "WAN IP Address" from the menu at left. The following screen will display:

3. Click "Yes" and proceed to the next page. Don't worry about the warning. If you were forced to go to the advanced settings there's something a little bit screwy anyway.  The following screen will display:

4. This page is very similar to the "Quick Setup" page except that at the bottom (#5) you have the choice of Encapsulation. Always set it for VC-Mux. This is generally the only reason you need to access the advanced settings, to set the correct Encapsulation type. Click "Apply".

Wireless Settings
1. If you want to set up a home wireless connection, go to the strart page and click on the "Wireless Setup" tab from the top menu. You should see this page.

2. Setup the modem using your own ESSID (just make one up and keep it simple) and your own WEP Key. A WEP key is a 10 character password in Hexidecimal notation; this means you can use only the numbers 0-9 and the letters a-f. Don't get too fancy; keep it as simple as possible without being too easy to figure out (see the example above).

To set the WEP Key click on "WEP" from the side menu. you will a screen like that below.

Once you have made all your changes click "Apply". That should do it.
